sunday brunch for baby violet
more violets for violet!
in addition to the 2+2 blouse, i also made baby violet an oliver + s sunday brunch jacket. for the main fabric i used a navy canvas that i ordered from fabric depot in portland.
normally i don’t like to order fabric online, but there is a nice story here: a few months after our 2017 wedding i shared this picture of neela in her flower girl dress and tagged fabric depot, since i had gotten the fabric for all the flower girl dresses there. they liked it so much they sent me a gift card, which i used for this blue canvas.
(long time readers may recall i thought it was really important that my nieces each have a dress in a style that was best suited for them. nine year old nora was the director of flower supply chain, seven year old etta was the manager of floral logistics, five year old maya was the flower distribution associate, and last but not least two year old neela was the floral intern.)
anyways i made this jacket using the canvas as the main fabric and the liberty of london for the facings and seam binding. i couldn’t stomach the idea of messing up the perfect front with actual button holes, so i added hidden magnetic snaps on the inside. the outer buttons, which are covered in the same blue canvas, are just for show. because i’m really worried about kids ripping off buttons and putting them in their mouth, i made sure these were really secure by bracing them with four small mother of pearl buttons on the inside.
the sunday brunch jacket has such a special place in my heart. it was one of the first oliver + s patterns i ever made (see my amateur sewing skills here in 2012 and a better version here from 2015). it’s such a cute style and the seam binding provides such a great opportunity to showcase a fun fabric like the liberty of london. i am excited to make one for own daughter soon!
