not throwing away my shot
he’s young, scrappy, and hungry!
for jude’s second halloween i decided to make him a hamilton costume.
this was my inspiration:
materials
the main fabric for the coat and the boot cuffs was merchant and mills linen that i picked up from a verb for keeping warm in oakland.
for the lining of the yoke i used a fun hamillton print from an etsy shop that now appears to have closed their store.
the buttons were from this etsy shop.
making the coat
i based the coat off the sketchbook shirt pattern from oliver + s for two reasons:
it had a lot of the elements i knew the coat would need, mainly the collar, but also the sleeves and back.
having sewn that pattern many times before i was confident i could make the necessary adjustments.
in order to make the shirt into a coat i made the following adjustments:
split the back into two pieces that fit to the shoulder without a pleat, but did have a slit up the back.
lengthened the back and front pieces and gave them an a-line shape.
made the sleeve more of a bell/a-line shape and lengthen it.
Removed the buttoned cuff from the sleeve and replaced it with a turned cuff.
removed the buttoned placket from the front and finished it will a hem facing that got thicker at the bottom (aka was a-line in shape).
first up was a muslin…
once i was happy with the adjustments i made the coat from the actual fabric. (my favorite detail might be the hamilton fabric i used for the lining of the yoke.)
accessories
for the boots i just made a little cuff that was attached with velcro.
we paired the coat and boots with a turtleneck and leggings from primary and a vest we had received as a hand me down.
finally we added a turkey feather (aka quill) that we found on a walk a few days before halloween.
finished product
i have to say, i was absolutely thrilled with how it came out.
update, we‘re including women in the sequel #talifromcalilamond
